Why are there different action and suspension levels for men and women?

The law sets lower action and suspension levels for both women and young people (under 18 years old) because they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead than adult men, and because lead can cause serious health effects, such as brain damage. When babies and children are developing, they have less protection against the harmful effects of lead. The law sets lower action and suspension levels for women in order to protect their unborn children should they become pregnant.
