What is 'like work' in the context of equal pay?

A woman can claim equal pay for 'like work', which is work that is the same or broadly similar to that done by a man, a comparator, in the same establishment.

If the work is similar, but the pay between a man and woman is different, it must be for a reason unrelated to the sex of the two employees otherwise it would be discriminatory. Such differences might include payment for extra responsibilities, long service and extra qualifications.
