Discipline and Policies

To comply with the Acas Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures (PDF, 167KB), your employer should have written policies and procedures for how workplace issues are dealt with.

Your employer should explain these policies and procedures clearly to you when you first join. Make sure you are aware of all the rules that apply to you at work, as breaking the rules could result in disciplinary action – and even dismissal.

You are entitled to a written statement of particulars of employment, including reference to details of any disciplinary rules, within one month of starting your job.

From April 2020, the law will change so that your employer must provide this statement from the first on the job.
